| The extreme clipper Golden West of 1441 tons was built by Paul Curtis in East Boston in 1852. As the ship was built for the California trade, she was called a California clipper. Golden West arrived in San Francisco on June 2, 1856. In Carl Cutler's book Greyhounds of the Sea, the following ship's log account is given: "June 2nd. Made Farallones Light at midnight, took pilot 7 AM, anchor 11AM, in 22 days from Japan." This same Farallons light is shown on this original 1855 Coast Survey chart of South Farallon Island. This watercolor depiction of Golden West shows the ship at dusk on June 1st, 1856 as she approaches the California coast and the Farallon Islands which lie approximately 25 miles to the west of the Golden Gate. |
