Clipper Ship David Crockett

The Clipper David Crockett was launched at Mystic, Connecticut on October 18, 1858. After a brief career as a New York to Liverpool packet, she was put into the California trade and made twenty-five passages from New York to San Francisco. Her first run to San Francisco was in 1857; her last in 1883.

On her twenty-first outward passage to San Francisco, David Crockett departed New York on March 26, 1879. She rounded Cape Horn 63 days out and arrived off Point Reyes, California on August 7, 1879. Her arrival into San Francisco was delayed by two days by calms and dense fog. While becalmed of Point Reyes, as shown here, she reported being close enough to the Point to hear the foghorn.

The 1855 chart of Point Reyes if from an actual document of that date reporting the progress of the U.S. Coast Survey.
