The Star of India, sketched on a chart of her birthplace, the Isle of Man, where she was built as "Euterpe" at Ramsey. She was launched on November 14, 1863. In the words of maritime historian Jerry MacMullen, "Ahead of her lay tropical seas, strange cargoes in strange and far-off ports, collisions, strandings, the ice of Alaskan waters, and a score of globe-girdling voyages." After a brief career in the Indian trade, "Euterpe" carried emigrants to Australia and New Zealand for many years under the flag of Shaw, Savill. In 1901 she was purchased by the Alaska Packers Association, who in 1906 changed her name to Star of India. In the Alaska salmon trade, she made voyages to Alaskan waters every year between 1902 and 1923. Star of India came to San Diego on July 9, 1927, and after an incredible saga of persistence and hard work, became the beautifully restored vessel that she is today. |
